N2N Gallery is extremely pleased to invite all aspiring and established artists in Abu Dhabi to work with and learn from the Crimean artist Alexander Tyunkin, who is a Master with Honors in Fine Arts, a qualified lecturer and the winner of several awards, with over 100 exhibitions and works displayed in the museums in Ukraine, Macedonia and Russia. His prior classes in the gallery last year undoubtedly epitomized the master’s invariable skills.

The landscape, like any other painting, written by the artist, in meaning and objectives, begins with the emotion from what he/she saw, and sometimes from a fictional image that is firmly imprinted in memory.  Often we are assisted in our work by such graphic materials as sketches, etudes or photographs. During this master class, we will work with photographic material, which caused the very emotion that was mentioned above.  But working with photography often requires a large selection and generalization of details, layout of the plot, consideration of the placement of textures and basic color spots because the camera sees and displays everything, and the artist always works with great selection.  The main tasks of this master class will be composition and color.  We will analyze the general laws of building a landscape composition while developing an integral vision and working with spots.  We will consider the colors in the photograph, often too bright, contrasting and open, and transform them into noble colors or the variants of a single color.  In general, we will transform the photo material into a painting.

At this workshop, we will analyze the relationship between sky and earth, between sky and water, consider the earth in a landscape, how softly it is necessary to paint the sky and where to underline with a line, what is the texture of air and clouds in a painting, and how much they differ, what is the sequence of layers when painting heaven and earth, where and what brushes are needed and why, the laws of color and the influence of the color of the sky on the color of everything around and reflexes and their relationship.  We will also analyze the basics of composition and coloring.

Alexander is an artist who often accepts challenges as a lecturer, always in a position to educate new groups of students. A large number of them went through his studio, especially graduates of arts – making him very experienced as a master teacher. This class is intended for amateurs but also to graduate artists who will certainly improve their skills learning from the Master, raising their education to a higher level.

Master Class Structure:

Homework:  Each participant has a task before the beginning of the master class – to come up with several plots of his future work on the theme “Landscape”. Coming to the lesson, the participant does not spend a lot of time thinking over ideas; you already know with what kind of idea you are going to work.

*Attention must be paid to ensure that the photographs are not of extreme midday or evening and the colours should be natural, close to nature.

 1st stage _ Introduction & Composition Basics

Artist will explain the basics of the composition. Very quickly, linearly and schematically he will sketch on the blackboard with a marker sketches of possible landscapes, analyzing the basic laws of composition (the location of the horizon line, the golden section in the landscape, the rhythm of the spots, distances between objects, etc.).

2nd stage _ Graphic Sketching & Building a Composition

Students will apply the received information on the paper. First you will need to outline the frame on the paper in proportions to your future finished format (pre-prepared canvas). Within borders, you will make a linear sketch of your painting. At this stage, artist will guide you and will make corrections to the composition where it’s necessary.

All these stages of training will make it possible to avoid major mistakes in composition and color on the big work. By artist’s deep conviction, any work with an unsuccessful composition is doomed to failure.

3rd stage _ Working with the Canvas Format

Having a clear idea about composition, format; it’s time to work it out on a canvas. Under a guidance of the artist the students will take all their previously learned knowledge and bring their composition to life, culminating in the final painting.

Those who complete the work and understand the principles can move on with another work.

The objective of this master class will be the transformation of the photographic material into a painting, balancing the composition in the landscape and the relationship of colours. Using Landscape as an example, the main stages of work will be considered: idea – layout(graphic sketch) – completed painting(on canvas).
